Frequently Asked Questions

Procurement and quality questions, answered the way a supplier questionnaire asks them.

Common Questions

If a question below is not covered, it can be answered directly — see the contact page.

How often should a CMM be calibrated?

Most quality systems specify an annual interval, adjusted for usage, environment stability and any history of drift. ISO 9001 clause 7.1.5.2 requires the interval to be documented and followed, not assumed.

What is the difference between calibration and verification?

Calibration establishes indicated-versus-reference values with a stated uncertainty. Performance verification is the pass/fail test against a specification like ISO 10360 or ASME B89.4.1, which is what most shop floors order.

What does ISO 10360-2 actually test?

Length measurement error, designated E0 and E150, across five calibrated test lengths measured three times each in seven positions: 105 measurements, checked against the machine's stated MPE.

Can calibration be done on-site, and how long is the machine down?

On-site testing is available for most bridge, gantry and cantilever machines. Time on site depends on axis travel, geometry condition and whether adjustment is needed; this is stated in the quotation.

What temperature does the room need to be?

ISO 1 sets 20°C as the dimensional reference temperature. Machine manufacturers specify a permissible excursion and gradient; artifacts are soaked for hours before testing to match room temperature.

What happens if the machine fails the as-found test?

As-found values are recorded before any adjustment is made. Results are reported with enough detail to run a reverse-traceability impact assessment against parts accepted since the last passing calibration.

What is a CMC and why does it matter to my tolerances?

Calibration and measurement capability is the smallest uncertainty a laboratory can claim within its accredited scope. A reported uncertainty smaller than the scope CMC is treated as an audit finding, not a selling point.

What is an error map, and can it be updated on my controller?

The error map is the volumetric compensation table the controller applies to correct known geometric errors. Some controllers accept an updated map after adjustment; OEM-locked controllers may not.

Will this satisfy an ISO 13485 or AS9100 auditor?

Certificates carry the traceability statement, reported uncertainty and decision rule these systems require, and accredited items are identified separately from non-accredited ones on the quote and certificate.

What does the certificate need to show for a design history file?

Identification of the machine and laboratory, dates of calibration and issue, method used, results with units and uncertainty, traceability statement, and before-and-after results where adjustment occurred.
